The Graduate Research Programme in Law of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is the oldest Centre for Legal Research and Post-Graduation Studies in Brazil. The Doctoral Studies degree (“Doutorado em Direito”) was implemented in 1931 and the Master`s in 1976.

Over the years, the Program has featured some of the most distinguished legal scholars and professors of UFMG`s School of Law, having consolidated its reputation as the benchmark in legal teaching and research in Brazil and as a place for high-level academic dialog with other renowned research centers and universities overseas.

The Program`s research and institutional profiles rely upon a significant number of professors under the Research Unit “Law and Justice”, with four research clusters/lines and projects:

  • Power, Citizenship, and Development under the Rule of Law;
  • Human Rights and the Rule of Law: foundations, participation, and effectiveness;
  • History, Power and Freedom
  • State, Reason and History
