Applications for the Ph.D. in Law and Master’s in Law Programs open every July and August.
The admissions process happens between September and November.
Applications and interviews are made entirely online, in English, Spanish or Portuguese.
In order to apply, interested individuals must submit a doctoral dissertation proposal or a master’s thesis proposal, indicating a collective research project in which they intend to develop their research. Detailed information about the collective research projects can be found on this website and in the call for applications.
The proposal must present the following information: title; object of the proposed research, with a clear statement of the problem or research questions that the investigation intends to answer or test (in addition to the hypothesis, in the case of a Ph.D. dissertation proposal); objectives, with a precise presentation of the general purpose and detailed indication of the planned actions, which must be aligned with the research questions; justification, with a literature review, demonstrating knowledge of the field and identifying existing gaps; demonstration of thematic and theoretical connection with the collective research project in which the thesis or dissertation proposal will be developed; methodology, with a detailed description of the research design, methods, and data analysis techniques to be employed; work plan, with a realistic timeline outlining that describes the main phases of the investigation, writing and defense; provisional outline of the thesis or dissertation, in the form of a preliminary summary of the planned text; bibliographical references.
The proposal should be up to 20 pages in length, excluding the bibliographical references from this limit, and observe the following formatting guidelines: font Times New Roman, size 12; text alignment justified; no spacing between paragraphs; line spacing 1.5; margins (top/bottom and left/right) 2.5 cm; A4 paper.
The admissions process includes online Oral Exam and Proposal Defense.

Expected Profile of Doctoral and Master’s Students in Law at UFMG
The expected profile of students includes skills in bibliographic research in different languages, critical reading and discussion, meticulous data collection, and high-quality writing. Additionally, students are expected to demonstrate autonomy in proposing and conducting their own research and collaborate with the academic activities of the collective research project to which they are linked.
