ABOUT

Juliana Cesario Alvim Gomes’ primary research areas are human rights and constitutional law, with a focus on themes such as Latin American constitutionalism, gender and sexuality, social mobilization and courts, equality and difference, and strategic litigation for human rights. She is an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and at Central European University (Austria). At UFMG, she coordinates the Human Rights Clinic, supervising undergraduate and graduate students’ activities, including research, advocacy, and strategic litigation at the local, national, and international levels, and co-coordinates the Constitutions Project, on Constitutionalism and Comparative Law. In the past, she taught at UERJ and UFRJ and was a visiting researcher at the Global Health Justice Partnership at Yale Law School. She is a member of several national and international research networks and is co-director of the Brazilian Section of the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S). Since 2019, she has been part of the team of “Sem Precedentes,” a weekly podcast on the Brazilian Supreme Court and the Brazilian Constitution, which in 2024 received the National Journalism Award of the Judiciary. Juliana has a decade of experience litigating for human rights in national and international courts as a lawyer and legal consultant. Juliana Cesario obtained her doctorate from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Juliana also holds an LL.M. from Yale Law School, a master’s degree from UERJ, and bachelor’s degrees in Law from UERJ and in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
