International students are warmly welcomed at the Postgraduate Program in Law at UFMG through two distinct pathways: 1) as an enrolled Ph.D. or Master’s student at UFMG; 2) as a visiting student enrolled in a doctoral or master’s Program abroad.
1. PH.D. AND MASTER’S IN LAW STUDENT AT UFMG
International students are admitted through our annual admissions process, typically held between September and November. Applications for the admissions process open between July and August. Applications and admissions process take place online and can be made in Portuguese, English or Spanish.
The Ph.D. in Law Program has a duration of 4 years and the Master’s in Law Program of 2 years. The academic year in Brazil commences in March and ends in mid-December. Summer vacations are from mid-December to early March. Winter break is in July.
Ph.D. in Law students are required to take 36 credits of courses and other academic activities, such as teaching assistantship or attendance at conferences. Each course has a duration of an academic semester (March to the early July or August to early December) and worth 4 credits. Students must enroll in 2 courses per semester until they complete the required credits. In the first semester, international students are allowed to enroll only in Portuguese for foreigners classes and are highly advised to take the UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies in July. Most classes will be in Portuguese, but exams, papers and dissertation are allowed also in English or Spanish.
Master’s in Law students are required to take 24 credits of courses and other academic activities, such as teaching assistantship or attendance at conferences. Each course has a duration of an academic semester (March to the early July or August to early December) and worth 4 credits. Students must enroll in 2 courses per semester until they complete the required credits. In the first semester, international students are allowed to enroll only in Portuguese for foreigners classes and are highly advised to take the UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies in July. Most classes will be in Portuguese, but exams, papers and dissertation are allowed also in English or Spanish.

2. VISITING STUDENT RESEARCHERS
We welcome international visiting students enrolled in Ph.D. or Master’s Programs at other universities, across all disciplines, who wish to conduct a portion of their research at UFMG Law School.
To be admitted as a visiting student researcher, prospective candidates must submit a proposal to the email pos@direito.ufmg.br with the following documents: 1) proof of enrollment in a Master’s or Doctorate Program; 2) authorization to spend a period of time at UFMG from the director of the Ph.D. or Master’s Program in which they are currently enrolled; 3) work plan in English, Portuguese or Spanish, concisely outlining the research subject, objectives, and planned activities to be undertaken at UFMG, including start and end dates; 4) approval of the work plan by one of our faculty members, who will serve as research supervisor at UFMG.
